What I Look For In A Blog

Hate to admit it, but I have been known to judge a blog by it's cover. By cover, I actually mean: 1) the blog design, 2) the name of the blog, and 3) the organization of everything. I know that there are good quality blogs worth reading, with a not-so-pretty design, but I just don't stick around long enough to find out. I am starting to sound so snobby, but hey - I'm being honest. Alas, I decided to share my personal opinions about the happies and crappies of blogging. You can take it or leave it.

P.S. there is one exception to this rule. If I already know you in real life, I could care less what your blog looks like. That's mostly because I want to know what's going on in your world!
Happies (what I like):
I like... a moderate amount of pictures. Something about the photos makes it much more interesting to read. I especially like reading someone's blog when there are GIFs. I guess I'm a kindergartner in that sense.

I like... organization when it comes to the layout of a blog. Be easy on the placement of advertisements, especially near the top of the page.

I like... when it's easy to comment. More times than not, I will close someone's blog if they have a complicated comment section. I tend to struggle with Wordpress blogs a lot, so if you ever get a comment from me & you use that platform, you should feel good about yourself. Ha!

I like... when bloggers write something that I can comment on. If someone writes about their day and the errands that they ran, I may not have much to comment on. However, if the writer were to conclude the post by asking a question at the end, or somehow connecting with the reader about their day, I could easily comment!

Crappies (what I dislike):
I dislike... when there are entirely too many pictures. This means that I have to scroll... and scroll... and scroll. I don't like scrolling too much. I was recently browsing random blogs and I saw one girl post about 15 "print screens" of her phone text message conversation on her blog. I was immediately turned off and went to another blog.

I dislike... when a blog has tons of sponsored or guest posts. I can't ever get myself to actually read a guest post. I just hate them and find them super boring. #sorrynotsorry

I dislike... a long and hard-to-remember blog link. Short and sweet is where it's at.

Am I totally crazy? What do you like and what do you dislike about blogs?

  1. I'm with you on most of those! I really dislike "read more" blogs. I like to scroll through and 9 times out of 10, if I have to click "read more" to finish reading a blog post, I just go on to the next blog.

I also like to answer questions posed in a blog. Makes it fun and interactive. I try to also pose a question to readers because I love for my blog to be a place of discussion.

  2. I'd agree with all of these! Especially guest posts.. I'm terrible but I never read them. If I want to read a post by that person, I'll just go to their blog!

  3. Agreed! My only addition is that I judge a blog on its "About Me" section. I always want to get to know the blogger and if they skimped on their "about me" page, no bueno. And if there's no "about me" at all? I'm closing the window as quick as I can.

  4. I totally judge a blog on its design and layout. If it's super complicated and looks a hot mess, NO THANK YOU! And I'm right there with ya on the blog link. Some of the ones I come across are just plain crazy and wayyyy too long and confusing.

  5. I remember a blogger posting 'people like pretty' and thought, 'damn, that's so true'!

I'm usually really good with pictures, but my wedding posts are definite SCROLL posts. I just couldn't help myself ;)!

  6. YES to all of these! Especially the photos. In grad school, I took a course called "Writing for New Media" and we discussed this topic - the "academics" think that between 2-5 photos is the sweet spot for bloggers, depending on how long your post is. And I'm all about SIMPLE design. Don't put pink, and glitter, and stripes, and goodness knows what else everywhere. It makes me think you're distracting me from your writing... Which I (sadly) judge pretty harshly (don't know the difference from they're, their and there? Probably not coming back for more...)

  7. Amen to these. I want to know about you, not what products pay you. and simple easy to read designs.

  9. YES! Jumping through hoops to comment and super long url's kill me. I'm guilty of judging a blog by the cover too... I have changed a lot of things throughout my time blogging based on things I look for or want/don't want when I'm reading other peoples blogs for sure :)

  10. Oh I'm so happy to meet someone else who dislikes guests posts!! ... And I agree with everything else too. I don't get anything from bump dates (preggo milestones). I don't like to say I don't like then because that is not nice :)...

  11. For me I don't like blogs that are too fancy and have a ton of ads. It just doesn't seem very personal ya know? But I too normally gravitate towards blogs that are pretty :) Since my blog is about infertility I like to read a blog that has an infertility or trying to conceive timeline so that I can get an idea of their journey. I know not all blogs are about this though. One day I hope to be looking for all of the mommy blogs :)

  13. I'm with you but I am totally guilty of the lots and lots of pictures...I'm a bit obsessive but I know it and I try and worn when posts are super picture heavy

  14. I too love a good blog design & organization. However, I don't care about too many pictures. I'd rather read a post with pictures than just a whole lot of paragraphs. Unless it's like 20 selfies of you doing the same thing or screen shots of your texts! ;)
